FOB Update

Many interesting people are joining FOB and we are glad to see the rate of joining is accelerating. We are up to 2027 joiners. Perhaps the site is acquiring critical mass.

You can see who is joining FOB by country and by occupation by using the search windows on the People page, the most popular page on the site, which does bear a passing resemblance to another well known and much more generalist networking site. One plea we make to members is that they supply a picture and a little background so people can put a face to a name

Some new groups are in process and we are encouraging people to post to the groups and to use the discussion boards. You can also comment on individual news items.

FOB is also very useful for Bow Wave as a place where we can lodge large documents, pictures and videos. The vagaries of corporate firewalls do not allow us to post any attachments with the zine, so a link over to fob is doubly useful to us.

Registration is gratis for individuals. Businesses can take out a page for a small supporting contribution and we welcome firms prepared to sponsor Group pages or advertise with us. This helps to keep FOB a going concern and puts a smile on the face of our programmers and accountants..

FOB is a project designed to adapt the new ways of using the internet for the sorts of people who read Bow Wave.

2. Piracy--Where Does It Go from Here?

The IMO has taken it upon itself to orchestrate the response to the rise of piracy as it can not solve the problem on its own. Lloyd's List , acting here as a video presenter, looks at how the solution to piracy can be fought on many fronts.

3. The Economic Importance of Sea Ports

Chris Koch, the Chairman of the World Shipping Council, our favourite trade body was asked to testify on 26OCT11 before the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on "The Economic Importance of Seaports -- Is the United States Prepared for 21st Century Trade Realities?" As always the WSC has done a good job working out a sensible overview, divided by ownership and modes of transportation. 4. Fred Doll

We were very sad to learn this week that Fred Doll, 54, died of a heart attack on 25th October 2011. He was a good correspondent to Bow Wave for many years, a nice man and a source of very good thinking on shipping. Bill Lines reminded us of Fred's maritime life:-

Fred provided shipowners, banks and insurers with market analysis, strategic planning, and assistance with projects through Doll Shipping Consultancy.

Prior to Doll Shipping Consultancy, he managed the consultancy business at H. Clarkson & Company, the world’s largest shipbroker, from 1997 - 1999, and was appointed to the Board of Directors in July 1998.

A graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Transportation, Fred sailed with Exxon Shipping Co. (now SeaRiver Maritime) from 1979 to 1986, gaining his Chief Mate’s license. He spent a four year sabbatical in Florence as a freelance writer and translator before being invited to rejoin Exxon.

From 1990 until joining Clarkson, he worked with Exxon Company, International in New Jersey in several different capacities, analysing shipping projects, charters and sales; working with the Sumed pipeline; and developing shipping industry analyses. In his spare time, he achieved an MBA in Finance and International Business at the Stern School of Business of New York University.

He leaves behind a wife and a grown up son. The funeral takes place at 11am on 8 November at the Anglican church in Forest Row

5. ISS Lighthouse Relay Voyage

Hats off to the ideas department in ISS who have taken the notion of giving to local charity and applied it to a global network of offices and shipping customers. Here is what it is all about:-

The Bell Rock Lighthouse was completed in 1811 by famed lighthouse builder Robert Stevenson, grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson. It was Scotland’s greatest engineering feat at the time - a huge construction challenge and a testament to human ingenuity and endurance and reckoned to be one of the seven wonders of the industrial world. Upon its centenary in 1911, our founder, James Lyle Mackay, took his title from the reef on which the lighthouse stood - the Inchcape Rock, 11 miles off the coast of his home town of Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland.

200 years later, to celebrate these historical events, ISS sponsored the Bell Rock Lighthouse Bicentenary Conference in Edinburgh, in the presence Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, customers, dignitaries and maritime journalists. To mark the occasion our CEO Capt. Claus Hyldager launched the ISS Lighthouse Relay Voyage, a major Corporate Social Responsibility initiative benefiting disadvantaged communities in all the countries around the world where ISS does business.

A commemorative baton containing a scroll with all nominated charities listed on it was handed to our UK General Manager, Kevin Cool, marking the start of the Relay Voyage. Now each ISS country GM will arrange to transport the baton to the next country with the support where possible of our customers’ vessels, progressing the voyage around the world.

Each charity has been chosen by our local country managers who have embraced this CSR initiative wholeheartedly and who are now responsible for organising the necessary events to raise funds for local causes. Their aim is to ensure donations reach our minimum target of US$1,000 per country plus match funding by ISS of a further US$1,000.

At each relay port when the baton departs on board ship bound for the next country, a brief handover ceremony will be held. The ISS country GM or Port Manager, a representative of the benefiting charity, the port or terminal’s own management and the ship’s Master will be present and a cheque or pledge will be presented by ISS to the Charity representative.

6. And Finally...

Merci Paul Dixon

A young boy, who had a lisp, was supposed to start school one day, and was told by his mother to wait by the bus stop. The kid goes to the bus stop, sees the bus and starts waving his arms and shouting: "Buth driver .. Buth Driver thtop thtop! ..."

The bus just keeps on going.

The next day, after his mother was upset for the bus not stopping, tells him to go to the bus stop and wave an old rag she gave him. Again, he follow his mother's instructions, waving the old rag and shouting "Hey buth driver...buth driver, thtop thtop!!.." Again, the bus just goes by.

When he returned home, his mother was really upset and tells him:

"Damn it, tomorrow I want you to go out and stand in the middle of the street, and he'll stop for sure." The next day, he's waiting for the bus, sees it, stands in the middle of the street and starts waving the rag and shouting:

"Hey buth driver...buth driver...thtop thtop!!"

The bus just keeps going, hits him and knocks him down. Upset, his mother marches to the schoold with great vigor to complain to the school's principal, who calls the bus driver to the office and questions him about about his action.

"Why did you hit that poor boy?" the principal asked.

The bus driver replies: "I can't thtand kidth that make fun of me!"
