News of Readers

David Heaselden has been to the new post of Loss Prevention Director for the Shipowners’ Club, the mutual P&I insurer of small and specialist vessels.

The Nautical Institute has the latest in its Command seminar series coming up at Bristol on Friday and Saturday November 4 and 5. A joint conference organised by the London and Bristol Channel Branches will examine The Ship/Port Interface --can it be made more efficient. Topics cover practical and legal aspects of bringing a ship into port successfully; how the workload can be managed sensibly and the extent to which port systems help. The aim is to provide practical solutions to the growing demands on ships’ crews and staff when making port calls and to discuss how each element in the chain can be made more efficient.

FOB Update

Many interesting people are joining FOB and we are glad to see the rate of joining is accelerating. Perhaps the site is acquiring critical mass.

You can see who is joining FOB by country and by occupation by using the search windows on the People page, the most popular page on the site, which does bear a passing resemblance to another well known and much more generalist networking site.

Some new groups are in process--there will be one under the aegis of Ferdi Stolzerberg called Shipping Hong Kong and Maria Dixon has started one called WISTA Latina. We are encouraging people to post to the groups and to use the discussion boards. You can also comment on individual news items.

Registration is gratis for individuals. Businesses can take out a page for a small supporting contribution and we welcome firms prepared to sponsor Group pages or advertise with us. This helps to keep FOB a going concern and puts a smile on the face of our programmers and accountants..

3. Here to Help Department: Regulatory News from California

Walter Hansell, writing in the Cooper White & Coopper Memo to Clients reports:

California Transparency in Supply Chains Act & Human Trafficking

California has enacted the nobly named Transparency in Supply Chains Act (SB657), effective January 1, 2012. The new law, motivated by concerns for slavery and human trafficking as sources of labor to produce consumer goods, is primarily a public disclosure mandate, and applies to retailers and manufacturers which do business in California and have annual worldwide gross receipts exceeding $100,000,000. Companies which meet those tests will be required to post a disclosure on their website with a "conspicuous and easily understood link to the required information placed on the business' home page." The required disclosure must state to what extent, if any, the business engages in verification (by itself or through agents) to evaluate and address risks of human trafficking and slavery in its supply chain; conducts audits of suppliers to evaluate compliance with company standards (including whether or not the audit was independent and unannounced); requires direct suppliers to certify their own compliance with slavery and human trafficking laws where they do business; maintains internal accountability standards and procedures for employees or contractors who fail to meet company standards; and provides training on human trafficking and slavery to company employees and management who have direct responsibility for supply chain management.

A retailer or manufacturer subject to this law is defined by its self-reported business classification as a retail seller or manufacturer in its California state tax returns, and the state Franchise Tax Board will be required to submit a list of such companies annually to the state Attorney General.

"The exclusive remedy for a violation of [the Transparency in Supply Chains Act] shall be an action brought by the Attorney General for injunctive relief" (new Civil Code Section 1714.43(d)).

Your editor's wife, Mary writes to point out that places are still available in a syndicate she is setting up for her colt thoroughbred racehorse yearling who will go into training in the Spring with Harry Dunlop for next year's 'flat' racing season. He is a good looking bay out of a Sadler's Wells mare (his dam Eishin Eleuthera won, and was placed several times in Japan). His sire is Pastoral Pursuits who stands at the National Stud. Anyone interested should contact her via the email below: She has received quite a few responses from Bow Wave Readers The terms are very reasonable and she points out that each member will 'own' a share in him which is not the case for racing 'clubs' and he would make an excellent Christmas present!

5. NASA and Japan Release "World’s Best Topographic Map of Earth"

NASA and Japan have published a new version of the world’s most complete digital topographic map. It could potentially help people across the globe plan highways, search for natural resources and protect lands with cultural or environmental significance.

Using images taken aboard NASA‘s Terra spacecraft, the free online map now features improved spatial resolution, increased horizontal and vertical accuracy, more realistic coverage over water bodies and the ability to identify lakes as small as 0.6 miles in diameter. The map, often referred to as a global digital elevation model, is an update of the one released in 2009
