2. Road from Rio

It will be a week or more before the many papers given at the UNCTAD Regional Conference for Competitiveness and Development will be posted on the UNCTAD Website.

A few findings:

The on-line sessions promoted by Messrs Brain Oxygen attracted 2700 registrants, some at them Bow Wave Readers.

To send an e-mail from Brazil to Argentina, the message runs via facilities physically based in the United States.

The issue of the availability of scanners within the CSI programme was raised repeatedly--the US federal Government in specifying these devices is looking into loosening World Bank loans for ports who might have trouble raising the cash. One member of the audience remarked that the Port of Rotterdam, not exactly a minnow of the industry, had one such device only.

Although the CSI is expressed as a voluntary scheme, it is reciprocal, so governments who want to can also station their customs officers in the US. Only Canada (in Seattle) and Japan (LA and Newark) have done so so far.

3. Sun Mobility

Our old friends Richard and Simon Chan in Hong Kong are seeing out the year in style. They have written in with details of their new venture with the Sun Hing Insurance Group which is opening on O1 December 2003:-

A member of a professional intermediary organization CIB, Sun Mobility Insurance and Claims Services Limited sets out to provide a niche service to the Transport Sector in place of Sun Hing Insurance Brokers Ltd. Their message to the transport market is that they are focused service providers for the "mobile" risks.

Apart from multimodal liabilities and ship agents , the new set up will also--as now--be broking blue and brown water P&I, H&M,Defence, LOH, War risks and other marine and transport related risks.

In the years in Hong Kong your editor spent working with these gentlemen,there were ample oppurtunities to observe the knowledge energy and committment of "the two Chans" as they are widely known. It is not in the least surprising that they are going from strength to strength in their new careers.

4. Gray Page Limited

Joe Corless, A director of this new marine investigations company has written in with some details::

Our new investigations company has been formed from the departure of the entire investigations team of MRCI (part of the Informa Group). Along with Joe, James Wilkes, Stephen Saville, James Walters and Sally Whatson all resigned back in October 2003, exiting MRCI as of the 20th November.

Gray Page has been up and running since Monday 24th November, based out of offices in Oxford. Our primary client base remains that of the legal fraternity and P&I clubs - with whom we provide anything from corporate veil investigations, asset searches, litigation support, due diligence to fraud investigation and recovery solutions.

5. Wither Marine Insurance?

The current (November) Issue of Global Reinsurance contains an article by your editor on the position of the marine market this less than bonny late 2003. The magazine which is edited by Sarah Goddard can be read on line but Readers will need to register. The monthly publication is well worth reading and the on-line service published helpful alerts when for example the latest reratings are made public. The service also has a commendable history for being first with the news.

6. And Finally...

For those of us who watch what we eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats, and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

Conclusion: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.
