The less we paid, the more we climbed. Tendrils
of smoke lazed just as high and hung there, blue, particulate, the opposite of dew.
We saw the whole court from up there. Few girls
had come, few wives, numerous boys in molt
like me. Our heroes leapt and surged and looped
and two nights out of three, like us, they'd lose. But "like us" is wrong: we had no result
three nights out of three: so we had heroes.
And "we" is wrong, for I knew none by name
among that hazy company unless
I brought her with me. This was loneliness
with noise, unlike the kind I had at home
with no clock running down, and mirrors.

2. Maritime Security Association

This week sees the launch of the Maritime Security Association. The Association has been formed to provide a coordinated and cost effective counter piracy management system for all ship owners, not just those transiting the Gulf of Aden. The delivery includes security assessments of routes and vessels, round the clock delivery of maritime intelligence, all encompassing kidnap and ransom insurance and the vetting and procurement of top grade on board security teams. Being a mutual association, MSA aims to generate surpluses to rebate to members as economies of scale are driven through volume buying of security services but without the possibility of supplementary calls. 3. The Everett Group of Companies

Hans Carl writes:-

Together with some old fellow employees of Everett Steamship Corporation S/A, I am trying to write the history of the Everett Group of companies. The first company L. Everett Inc. was established in Shanghai in 1917. Eventually, the head office moved first to Manila and after WWII to Yokohama. At its height the company had 28 branch offices from Tokyo to Kuwait and a fleet of 32 vessels, an Air Cargo branch, the Everett Travel Service company and a few things more.

4. ITIC Says Professional Indemnity Cover Essential

Writing in its newsletter, The Wire, the latest issue of which is dedicated to the hydrographic sector, ITIC cites by way of example a US court ruling which held that the then-US Hydrographic Office (USHO) was not negligent in causing a passenger ship to ground between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard after the ship’s owner claimed that a reef had been charted negligently.

Firstly, the court held that the error on the chart was not a result of any negligence by the USHO because the organisation conducted the survey in 1939 using state-of-the-art techniques. It also found that there was no pressing need for the USHO’s successor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), to perform a new survey. Finally, the court ruled that the ship did not actually rely on the defective chart when fixing its course. Therefore, even if the chart had been defective, it did not cause the loss. The US Court of Appeal confirmed the second point, but the first was not mentioned in the judgment.

ITIC points out, "Although there was no liability on the USHO, the defence costs amounted to a small fortune and, in the US court system, the winning party does not receive a cost award. In this instance, the party was a large national hydrographic office, but the same could apply to anyone providing data or professional advice. The cost of being proven innocent can be high"

ITIC also cites a case in which a hydrographic surveyor had been contracted to produce a chart for a telecommunications company to allow the positioning of underwater fibre-optic cables. A significant time after the charts had been created, a ship towing an anchor made contact with one of the cables and with an underwater electricity cable, which caused damage estimated at $175,000. A claim was made against all parties to the project, including the hydrographic surveyor. However, the surveyor was successfully defended on the basis that the charts were created specifically for its client a year prior to the incident. However, the cost of the defence came to $32,000.

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Childbirth

Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark, so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-year-old girl, to hold a flashlight high over her mother so he could see while he helped deliver the baby.

Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and patted him on his bottom. Connor began to cry.

The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-year-old what she thought about what she had just witnessed.

Kathleen quickly responded,

'He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place..... ...smack him again!'
