1. Welcome

Poem of the Week

Three Epitaphs

For a Postal Clerk

Here lies wrapped up tight in sod
Henry Harkins c/o God.
On the day of Resurrection
May be opened for inspection.

For a Rail Traveler

Here lie Jonah Jones's uncoupled remains:
A cowcatcher caught him as he changed trains.
His fragments took off in a few directions.
May he rise at the last trump to make connections.

For a Washer of Dishes

Here rattle about in the suds of the grave
The porcelain bones of a deep-sink slave.
Impeccable platters were what he wrought
With a face like a rag wrung dry of thought.
Let the scouring rain and the sponging worm
Deliver his spirit from crust and crumb
And stack him up high beyond sin and stain
In the light of the Lord to let him drain.

X.J. Kennedy, from Peeping Tom's Cabin:
Comic Verse 1928-2008

From Brian Richardson:-

In retirement I have become involved with an organisation with which I expect you are familiar; namely Transport on Water Association (TOW). TOW was formed in 1974 to promote a healthier, socially and economically more balanced environment of the communities belonging to the Rivers Thames and Medway and their associated waterways.
This year sees the 33rd annual Barge Driving Event on Saturday 16th June next. This unique annual event is rowed over a course of seven miles between the Palace of Greenwich and the Palace of Westminster, with each barge manned under oars by crews comprising Freemen of the River Thames and Apprentices of the Watermen's Company. No more than three crew members can row at any time, using the 20ft. long oars known as "sweeps". Two oarsmen power the craft while a third sweep is used at the stern to steer the barge along with the flood tide. Each barge must collect or "fetch" at least one pennant from a moored barge during the event to qualify for a trophy.

Whilst the crews start to assemble around 10.00 am the start is at 12.00 noon and is scheduled to finish at Westminster Bridge around 14.30 / 15.00 hours when the tugs and barges will return to Greenwich Pier for the presentation of trophies around 16.30 hours.

Start of the Race will be by the Master or Senior Warden, Master Elect of the Watermen's Company and the Guest of Honour this year is Richard Everitt, Chief Executive of the Port of London Authority.

The Event provides another opportunity to see Watermen and Lightermen and demonstrate their old skills of watermenship, and in so doing, encourage and publicise the promotion of waterborne traffic on the Thames. A fine spectacle and I am sure that all spectators will have a most enjoyable day especially if we are blessed with fine weather.

5. ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"

This item appears in the latest edition of Flashlight, Mike Wall's e-zine which deals with all things concerning the world of marine survey:-

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) campaign. The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE." For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc.

6. And Finally...

Thanks to the sharp eyed Tony Flanagan:-

A man asked his wife what she'd like for her birthday... "I'd love to be eight again" she replied
On the morning of her birthday he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops and then took her off to the local theme park. What a Day!

He put her on every ride in the park:

* The Death Slide
* The Wall of Fear
* The Screaming Monster Roller Coaster

Five hours later she staggered out of the theme Park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. Right away they journeyed to a McDonalds where her loving husband ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate milk shake.

Then it was off to the movies: the latest Star Wars epic, a hot dog, popcorn, all the Coke she could drink, her favourite ice cream and M& M's. What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed onto the bed exhausted. He leaned over his precious wife with a big smile and lovingly asked "Well Dear, what was it like being eight again?"

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. "I meant my dress size, you useless moron"

P.S.

Ah the good old days. Looks surprisingly genuine except for the post modern irony in item 11. Taken from Paul Dixon's Joke of the Day:-

Do you ever feel overworked, over-regulated, under-leisured and under-benefited? Take heart, this notice was found in the ruins of a London office building. It was dated 1852:

1. This firm has reduced the hours of work, and the clerical staff will now only have to be present between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays.

2. Clothing must be of sober nature. The clerical staff will not disport themselves in raiment of bright colors, nor will they wear hose unless in good repair.

3. Overshoes and topcoats may not be worn in the office, but neck scarves and head wear may be worn in inclement weather.

4. A stove is provided for the benefit of the clerical staff. Coal and wood must be kept in the locker. It is recommended that each member of the clerical staff bring four pounds of coal each day during the cold weather.

5. No member of the clerical staff may leave the room without permission from the supervisor.

6. No talking is allowed during business hours.

7. The craving for tobacco, wine, or spirits is a human weakness, and as such is forbidden to all members of the clerical staff.

8. Now that the hours of business have been drastically reduced, the partaking of food is allowed between 11:30 and noon, but work will not on any account cease!

9. Members of the clerical staff will provide their own pens. A new sharpener is available on application to the supervisor.

10. The supervisor will nominate a senior clerk to be responsible for the cleanliness of the main office and the supervisor's private office. All boys and juniors will report to him 40 minute before prayers and will remain after closing hours for similar work. Brushes, brooms, scrubbers, and soap are provided by the owners.

11. The owners recognize the generosity of the new labor laws, but will expect a great rise in output of work to compensate for these near Utopian conditions.

P.P.S. From freight and transit Broker David Frugtniet comes this update on a window cleaning theme. You need a reasonably fast connection to download this one:-
