Poem of the Week

The Thirty Favorite Lives: Amager

I woke up every morning on the fourth floor,
in the two-hundred-year-old walls made
of plaster and river grass. I would leave
the woman and walk across beautiful København
to the island of Amager. To my small room
in the leftover Nazi barracks that looked out
on a swamp. Most of the time it was winter.
I would light my hydrant-sized iron stove
and set a pot on top, putting in hamburger
and vegetables while the water was getting hot.
Starting to type with numb hands. The book
I planned to write in two weeks for a thousand
dollars already a week behind (and threatening
to get beyond a month). Out of money and no
prospects. Then the lovely smell of soup
and the room snug. I would type all day
and late into the night. Until the soup
was finished. Then I would start back across
the frozen city, crunching over the moats,
loud in the silence. The stars brilliant.
Focused on her waiting for me, ready to fry
sausages at two in the morning. Me thinking idly
of the ancient Chinese poet writing in his
poverty, "Ah, is this not happiness."

3. Trafalgar 200

This tuesday 28JUN05,for the first time since 1977, the ships will line up for review by the monarch in the Solent. Ships from 35 of the world's navies are taking part in the International Fleet Review at the invitation of the Royal Navy. Your editor intends to find a decent vantage point somewhere near Ryde on the Isle of Wight to view the whole spectacle.

Our friend Paul Hubbard has recently delivered 7 truck loads of souvenir programmes produced by his company. The souvenir programme contains 112 colour pages mainly focused on the International Review with an anchorage chart and detailed descriptions of all the participants. It also contains naval historical articles as well as
an outline running order for the Son et Lumiere that takes place after the Review and also details of the International Drumhead Ceremony on the 29th June.

The official programme is available at a cost of £10 and is available from this weekend in the Visitor Information Centres in Portsmouth; in the Isle of Wight after the Round Island Race; on the Trafalgar 200 website www.trafalgar200.com ; and it will be for sale throughout the Summer. 5. Sea Sunday

Alexandra Evered of Bayside Shipping writes:-

Whilst I am not a particularly religious person myself, from time to time I do some voluntary work at The Mission to Seafarers in Melbourne (www.missiontoseafarers.com) as I believe that they fill an incredibly important role for visiting seafarers. Mission centres around the world provide friendship, hospitality, pastoral care and a 'home away from home.' through the 'Flying Angel Club' and they welcome all Seafarers regardless of faith, race or creed. Seafarers are able to attend the centres, make phone calls to their families and loved ones overseas, contact them by internet,and enjoy friendly hospitality in the short time they spend in port.

However, the work of the Mission to Seafarers is dependant on charitable donations and the generosity of its supporters in the shipping industry and wider community.

Sunday July 10th has been set aside worldwide by The Mission to Seafarers to remember that we all depend on Seafarers. For those interested in attending, a special thanksgiving service to honour seafarers worldwide will be held at:
