News of Readers

CEO Ray Miles of CP Ships, whom your Editor got to know (and like) during the Board Meetings of the TT Club has been translated to higher things.

He has been elected as Chairman of the International Council of Containership Operators. Known informally as the Box Club, the council is the international organization of container shipping industry chief executives who meet twice a year to discuss industry issues.

Carl Gill, the insurance man at Cenargo Shipping is off to pastures new at British Marine Mutual.

Andy Maisey ,following the sale of Andrew Weir
Shipping, is moving on after many years involved with international container control:

He will now be working at O'Connor Transport & Intermodal Rail Terminal in Widnes (near Liverpool). The company opened on their current site at the end of 1998 and the facility has enjoyed good growth. He is pleased to be joining a very hard working team in a growing and developing business. "In an industry where good news has been hard to come by over the last few years" he says "theirs is probably a rare story particularly on the landside operation of containers".

Heidi Toben has moved from Marsh Paris to Marsh New York. Her insurance career has taken her away from the
marine side, and she now specializes in looking after large international accounts. She has subscribed to Bow Wave on account of the urgings of Mr Mike Ryan in an establishment on 47th St. known as Langans Bar.

Readers Wants

A reader asked your Editor the other day:

Where do stevedores go to get training? Does any Reader know the answer to this rather good question?

An issue given over to the Iraq War. Leave us pray it is over soon.

Good Reading.

2. Effect of War on Cargo

The sense of how war knocks our daily routines, even in the humble business of moving cargo from place to place is well caught in this webzine which assembles together in one place a variety of stories on goods with no place to go or only at a price.

3. War Reality

The best of a not particularly good crop of pieces on the implications of the current war in Iraq appeared in the underrated American publication Insurance Journal which covers the Property/Casualty Scene.

4. Page One

Mike Miller's weekly E-zine Page One is right on target.

He writes:

The war in Iraq has begun. This week we offer a special section looking at the effects of the war on trade, on freight movement, and with early reports on what the war might mean for the future of freight

5. Poem of the Week

Dulce et Decorum est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! -- An ecstasy of fumbling Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime. --
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, --
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.
Wilfred Owen (1921)

6. And Finally.....

Many thanks to Michael Farlie for this ludicrous document

MEMORANDUM

From: Bin Laden, Osama
To: Team Mates
Subject: The Cave

Hi guys

We've all been putting in long hours recently but we've really come together as a group and I love that. Big thanks to Omar for putting up the poster that says "There is no ' I ' in team" as well as the Garfield poster that says "Hang In There, Baby." Very humorous.

However, while we are fighting a Jihad, we can't forget to take care of the cave. And frankly I have a few concerns.

First of all, while it is OK to be concerned about cruise missiles, we should be even more concerned about the carpet dust in our cave. We want to avoid excessive dust inhalation, (a health and safety issue) - so we need to sweep the cave daily. I've done my bit on the cleaning rota............. . have you? I've posted a sign up sheet near the cave reception area (next to the halal toaster).

Second: It's not often I make a video address, but when I do, I'm trying to scare most of the world population, okay? That means that while we're taping, please do not ride your motor scooter in the background or keep yelling the 'Wassup' thing. Just while we're taping. Thanks.

Third: Food. I bought a box of Dairylea cheese slices recently, clearly wrote "Ossy" on the front, and put it on the top shelf. Today, two of my Dairylea Slices were gone. Consideration. That's all I'm saying.

Fourth: I'm not against team chanting and all that, but, we must distance ourselves from the Westerner's bat and ball game. Please do not chant "Ossy Ossy Ossy Oi Oi Oi" every time I ride past on the donkey. Thanks.

Finally, we've heard that there may be Western soldiers in disguise trying to infiltrate our ranks. I want to set up patrols to look for them. First patrol will be. Omar, Muhammad, Abdul, Akbar, and Dave.

Love you lots, Group Hug.
Os.

PS - I'm sick of having Osama's Bed Linen scribbled on my bed sheets - Cut it out Abdul, not funny anymore
